Yves Saint laurent Black Taffeta Ruffle One Shoulder Bow Dress YSL, 1990s
One of the hallmarks of Yves Saint Laurent’s career was his artistic interpretation of femininity in many different forms. In doing this, YSL operated less on trends and more on themes, tying in certain design elements over the course of several collections. From the early 90s to the 2000s, YSL employed more traditionally feminine silhouettes and incorporated textural elements such as braids, ruffles, and bows.
Presumably from his 1993 collection, this black cocktail dress is done in a viscose with black taffeta details. Along the one-shoulder neckline a layer of taffeta ruffles undulates ending in a medium-sized bow with tails at the shoulder. The angle of this neckline ruffle is balanced by the layers of ruffles at the hem attached in the opposite direction.
These layers add a slight volume and form a very subtle and asymmetric trumpet silhouettes. Throughout the body, the dress has a relaxed fit and gathers into another bow detail on the right hip. This little black dress offers a dynamic design combined with a classically feminine aesthetic that makes for an easy-to-wear cocktail option.
