Vintage Hermès Embroidered Wool Felt Tassel Belt — Museum Piece, c. 1940s

$1,300

This exquisite vintage Hermès belt embodies the house’s origins as an equestrian leather goods maker — a heritage that continues to define its artistry and allure. As described by The Metropolitan Museum of Art:

“Hermès is a purveyor of fine leather goods as well as clothing and accessories of the highest quality. The company began as an equestrian leather goods maker, first supplying harnesses to coach builders. The house's logo is a horse-drawn carriage and this belt is a signature piece portraying three different scenarios. The first is of two women riding in a carriage holding their parasols; the second of two people, one seated and one standing while driving the carriage; and the third of a man driving a covered carriage inhabited by a female passenger.”

Crafted from black wool felt and lined in grosgrain, the belt features these same exquisitely embroidered horse-and-carriage scenes, finished with sculpted cord knots and long silk tassels. It ties gracefully at the waist or hips, a rare fusion of Hermès’ early equestrian identity and its enduring sense of luxury.

A belt of the same design is held in The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute — attesting to the historical and artistic importance of this model.
