Vintage Galanos Polka Dot Jacket 1980s
Prolific designer James Galanos is known for his luxurious ready-to-wear collections that were crafted to couture standards. He oversaw every detail of his work, even traveling to Europe to source the best fabrics and unique buttons for his designs. A favorite of first lady Nancy Reagan, the Galanos skirt suit she wore to the Royal Wedding in 1981 is possibly one of her most iconic looks.
The 1980’s were an eclectic and exciting time for fashion, with styles ranging from glam punk rock to pearls and power suits. Marked by the meteoric rise of Madonna, the phenomenon of the trend setting style of Princess Diana, and supermodels such as Brooke Shields and Elle MacPherson gaining celebrity status, there is no question that this era was a time for bold female expression.
From that period, this chic jacket by Galanos is done in an emerald green cotton-silk blend with green metallic thread creating a quilted diamond overlay. The diamond motif continues with a print of large purple, cerulean blue, and neon-orange polka dots forming a pattern of large and small diamonds as well as a large X across the entire length and width of the back, and front, of the jacket.
The menswear inspired jacket begins with a simple high notch lapel creating a V opening at the neck. Long sleeves reach the wrist with a discreet placket opening at the back in lieu of a more traditional cuff, creating a gorgeous understated slit that follows the seam at the back of the arm.
The unstructured shoulders allow the masterfully cut fabric to follow the natural lines of the body, unencumbered by extra padding. An open front without closures emphasizes the less formal nature of this jacket, which remains elegant throughout. One can easily imagine this versatile jacket paired with palazzo pants or a short dress, perfect for evening wear or an addition to a professional wardrobe.
