Saint Laurent Arabesque Print Blue Black Ruffle Collar Maxi Dress YSL, 1980s

Yves Saint Laurent was no stranger to controversy throughout his career for his notable tendency to push the envelope of traditional fashion. At the same time, YSL knew how to balance his own modern vision with the realm of tradition and history. This circa 1984 maxi dress is a perfect example.

Done in an extremely fine Aegean blue cotton organdy, this dress is printed with swirling black art-nouveau motif with a silhouette that pays homage to historical 19th century evening wear. Beginning with a boat-neckline, the décolletage is framed by a full ruffled collar that extends to cover the bust as the mid-section of the dress is sheer.

At a dropped, asymmetric waistline the skirt is gathered with immense fullness falling in an off-center high-low hemline. Finishing with a matching waist sash, this dress is a versatile option that is equally comfortable and breezy for daywear and elegant enough for an evening occasion.
