Fall 1991 Runway Givenchy Boutique Black Mesh Magenta Satin Evening Gown

$0

“The dress must follow the body of a woman, not the body following the shape of the dress,” Hubert de Givenchy once said. This exceptional gown from his Nouvelle Boutique ready-to-wear collection exemplifies his approach to fashion and proves why clients such as Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis adored him.

Created in a beautifully proportioned drop-waist silhouette, it strikes a balance between casual ease and elegant refinement. The ensemble is comprised of two layers for a dimensional effect. Underneath is a structured magenta silk duchesse gown. Corseted and lined on its interior, its bustier-style top hugs the bustline and then falls gently over the midriff before meeting the floor-length skirt at the hip.

Over this is a long-sleeved dress, made from soft black tulle that is festively accented by holographic ribbons in yellow, blue, purple, pink and green. Designed almost two decades ago, the piece still looks modern today and will stand out at formal party or black-tie event.

This vintage Givenchy Nouvelle Boutique evening gown from 1991 is in excellent condition. The dress features two layers: one in a magenta silk duchesse satin and the other in a soft black tulle accented with holographic ribbons in yellow, blue, purple, pink and green. The foundational layer has structure, with a bustier-style top. Corseted and lined, it hugs the bustline and then softens to gently skim the midriff. It meets the waistline and a full, floor-length skirt at the hip.

The top layer has long sleeves, fitted with 5-inch zippers. The sleeve ends and skirt hem are hand-finished. The hidden back zippers are also hand-finished. It’s never too soon to start collecting them, as an investment in your wardrobe—and in yourself.
