Christian Dior Multi Color Silk Velvet Patchwork Coat 2017

The French house of Dior is known for its long legacy of refined and traditionally sophisticated couture. For the 2017 Pre-Fall collection creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri created almost 100 looks, including an eclectic array of embroidered coats, tulle gowns, velvet baby doll dresses, and biker jackets. The collection coincided with the Maison’s 70th anniversary and paid homage to heritage designs and iconic prints while maintaining an individualistic, contemporary aesthetic.

As seen as look #46 on that season’s collection, this beautiful coat was photographed on Zoë Kravitz by Patrick Demarchelier for Allure magazine and was seen on Camille Rowe at the 2017 Dior photocall in Paris. Done in a patchwork of small satin and velvet hexagons that create an abstract, honeycomb mosaic, this coat is a fine example of what makes Dior unique.

The honeycomb motif continues with a pattern of three large black and yellow hexagons that extend across the sleeves, collar, and front and back of the coat. Smaller patterns of flowers that in turn create a large snowflake in the center of each black and yellow hexagon are made up of a medley of colorful hexagonal patches in rich hues of lavender, rose, peach, navy, cream, red, and mint green. Patches with stripes, polka dots, plaid, and floral patterns are interspersed throughout, giving this jacket a lively, jovial feeling and a satisfying visual movement of its own.
