Alberta Ferretti Silk Chiffon Patchwork Open back Halter Gown, 2005
The first rule of a collection is to tell a story. Italian designer Alberta Ferretti is a poet in cloth, telling epic tales with each look from her shows. Capturing the essence of the feminine and injecting studies of nature, design, and science, Ferretti’s quiet success in the fashion world makes her a designer to covet. From her Spring 2005 ready-to-wear line, this halter dress makes subtle references to historical dress practices of the Rococo and Elizabethan eras.
Pieced chiffon in celadon, aqua, blush, coral, and deep purple drape across the body asymmetrically that give the impression of watercolor or stained glass. Frayed edges add textural depth to the otherwise delicate fabric. The various cuts of the fabric show the nature of the fabric as they drape differently in each panel. The sheerness of the fabric plays with the deep lower back of the dress that cascades down to a slight train in the back. Impactful and regal, this dress is a contemporary work of art. The dress can be seen in the images to the left on the 2005 runway.
