1990s Givenchy Red Straw Boater Grosgrain Bow Hat

$0

We have Gabrielle Chanel to thank for high fashion’s enduring love affair with the boater. When she was still a French chanteuse, she adored wearing the leisurely straw hat style and would personalize it with her own trimmings. Friends began to ask for their very own versions and the rest, shall we say, is history. Chanel and her fellow Parisians Yves Saint Laurent and Hubert de Givenchy have all been enamored with the boater.

This one by the latter designer is part of that legacy. Used an accessory in his haute couture collections in 1990 and 1991, it was paired with elegant skirt suits. But clearly this beautiful chapeau, made from shiny red straw and embellished with a red grosgrain bow, could be worn with just about anything. With summer on its way, it’s a piece that will protect you from sun and look unbelievably chic while doing so.

This vintage Givenchy Nouvelle Boutique hat from the Nineties is in excellent condition. It was originally purchased from the Givenchy boutique in Paris. It is a classic boater silhouette, with a flat top, flat brim and straight sides. It is woven from shiny red straw and trimmed in a red grosgrain ribbon. The ribbon is finished by a bow. A similar ribbon lines the hat’s interior. High-quality vintage pieces like this are yours to live in and love while increasing in value every year. It’s never too soon to start collecting them, as an investment in your wardrobe—and in yourself.
