Basha Gold
1990s Givenchy Numbered Haute Couture Silk Brocade Black Velvet Bow Skirt Suit
Hubert de Givenchy wound down his forty-three-year career at his namesake brand during the Nineties, leaving behind a legacy of creating tailored, elegant and impeccable clothes for clients such as Audrey Hepburn, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Princess Grace of Monaco. This haute couture skirt suit reflects his mastery.
The two-piece ensemble is cut from the most luxurious silk brocade. The lush fabric’s floral design beautifully catches the light and shimmers in deep copper with hints of orange. The silhouette is demure, with a fitted jacket and knee-length pencil skirt, to better showcase its impeccable details. Those visible to the eye are a trio of rococo-inspired black velvet bows and ornate buttons at the sleeves that are made from a circle of black crystal hearts set in gold.
Those that are less visible—but no less impressive—include a hand-set silk charmeuse lining, skirt zipper and hidden silk-covered snaps at the front placket. This is French workmanship at its finest, which never goes out of style. It makes this suit one that can be reached for time and time again for cocktail parties, galas and other formal occasions.
