1980s Krizia Coiled Gold Rope Hat

$0
Krizia’s bold brand of fashion hit its stride in the 1980s. Never one to play to excessive frills, Krizia’s founder Mariuccia Mandelli believed that women should dress with decisiveness. This braided and coiled gold rope hat echoes Mandelli’s tendency for crisp style and works with one of the 1980’s best trends – bold materiality.

The gold rope has intentionally low twist, bringing out the sheen of individual fibers. The coiled braid, which is skillfully hand-stitched to a light brown felt lining, has pleasing dimension and weight as it dips down elegantly over the forehead. An elastic chin strap attached at either side of the interior provides a secure fit.

This hat looks fabulous with everything from sleek bobs to wavy curls. The sculptural and prescient natures of Krizia’s designs were recognized early on. In 1982, Mandelli was one of few invited participants to show in M.I.T.’s first fashion exhibition titled Intimate Architecture: Contemporary Clothing Design. This hat wears in the way that Mandelli intended, with controlled confidence.

This 1980s era hat by Krizia is in excellent condition. Made from gold braided rope with high sheen and low twist, it has basic coil construction hand stitched to a light brown felt lining cap. The overall shape is round with the center front dipping down over the forehead.

An elastic chinstrap is attached at both sides of the interior for a secure fit. A similar style of this hat is held in the Met Archives.
