1970s Stavropoulos Couture Burgundy Draped Silk Dress

$975

Known for creating beautiful eveningwear, Greek designer George Stavropoulos launched his own label in 1960. Inspired by classical Greek sculpture, his clothes were crafted by hand to couture standards, and were worn by stars and First Ladies alike, including Barbra Streisand, Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Kennedy, and Lady Bird Johnson. He is remembered for his masterful work with chiffon and for the high retail price his gowns commanded, which was upwards of $7500 in the 1980s.

From the 1970s, this incredible Stavropoulos dress comes to life when worn, and moves beautifully with the wearer. It is brilliantly draped to create volume and floats at the back when the wearer moves, making it easy to picture this dress on a ballerina. Done in a luxurious couture quality burgundy silk that has a nice sheen, this dress oozes a dramatic sophistication.

The bodice begins with an elegant boat neck and long sleeves, allowing the cut and drape of the silk to take center stage. A low V neckline at the back of the bodice adds a small risqué element which also doubles as the center point for more incredible draping. An inverted pleat at the center back of the dress creates a magnificent asymmetric flounce on one side, and a long, looping draped panel on the other, giving the eye something new to appreciate at each angle.
