1930s Vintage Velvet Bordeaux Sculptural Turban Hat

$0

The 1930s saw lively experimentation in millinery. Designers like Elsa Schiaparelli challenged typical forms and shapes, transforming the fashionable hat into sculpture. This playful, yet serious, hat reflects the glamour of 1930s Hollywood and the fashion for dressing head to toe. Made from a deep Bordeaux colored velvet, it is a modified turban hat constructed from two primary pieces.

A circular piece of velvet covers the crown with subtle gathers at center back, and a meticulously topstitched band wraps around the head, extending out from center front and twisting up into a top knot. The knot has an open structure, exposing the tightly looped design. Lined in a silk georgette, the interior of this hat is finished with a grosgrain ribbon headband.

This hat can be worn with a range of hair styles from a loose bob to hair that is completely swept up behind, like Lana Turner’s turbaned look in MGM’s classic film The Postman Always Rings Twice. Hand finished 1930s hat, done in velvet with hand applied grosgrain ribbon sweatband. Lined. Excellent condition.
