Isabel Canovas Black & Gold Silk Leather Green Bakelite Leaf Clutch, 1980s
French designer Isabel Canovas is a hidden gem of the fashion scene. Having worked for some of the most eligible fashion brands including Dior, Hermès, and Louis Vuitton, Canovas eventually launched her own boutiques to soon be heralded as “the queen of accessories'' through her often unconventional and Schiaparelli-esque designs.
This circa 1980s clutch is made from a marigold silk overlayed in a black lace that gives the vibe of an African kente motif. A buttery black leather forms the sides and bottom of the rectangular clutch. At the top a striking lime green leaf frame, presumably made from Bakelite, encloses the button fastener.
This clutch creatively mixes textural elements that culminate in a clutch that boasts its man made qualities while still exuding an earthy aura. This Canovas clutch is a rare, collector’s piece that will surely serve as a pop-of-color or statement accessory to add some interest to your day or evening look.
